The PS Portal, Sony’s handheld companion for the PS5, resembles a DualSense controller split around an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by streaming games at up to 60fps. The controller retains DualSense features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen replacing the touchpad. The Portal supports game streaming outside your home, provided you have a highly stable, high-speed internet connection. Note that the PS Portal requires a PS5 to function, as it’s not a standalone device.

Update: No PS5 needed for PS Portal gaming anymore. Sony has added a feature allowing users to stream games directly from its PlayStation Now cloud service, bypassing the need for a $500 console. Portal owners can now connect to their PS5 or Sony’s cloud servers, unlocking access to over 120 titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. A top-tier PlayStation Plus subscription is required, but $18 monthly is far more affordable than a $500 console plus $70 per game.

The PlayStation Portal isn’t the only way to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi at home. The PS Remote Play app on mobile devices, including handhelds like the Steam Deck, offers similar functionality. However, setup is more complex, and you may lose some DualSense features.

PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy

"The PlayStation Portal surprised me, winning me over despite my initial doubts. It’s a far better experience than pairing a phone with a clip-on controller, and it performs beyond my expectations. I love the flexibility to play my PS5 anywhere with solid Wi-Fi, especially when my family’s using the TV to play the Switch. While it fully depends on a PlayStation 5 to work, its main limitations are the inability to log into Wi-Fi requiring a browser and no Bluetooth audio support. Despite these quirks, it’s the best PlayStation Remote Play solution yet. If not for those issues, I’d say it’s essential for PS5 owners who love handheld gaming or share a TV."
