Nintendo Ships Switch 2 'Out of Stock' Signs Before Launch

by Scarlett Sep 28,2025

Reports indicate Nintendo has started distributing "Out of Stock" signage featuring Switch 2 branding to retailers, even before the console's official release.

The Switch 2 launches in just two days—on Thursday, June 5—with Nintendo anticipating supply shortages due to overwhelming demand.

As shared on Reddit (via VGC), official Switch 2 "Out of Stock" signs are appearing in U.S. stores alongside standard promotional materials for both the console and its launch title Mario Kart World. "Nintendo sent us these signs," posted a Reddit user employed at a store planning a midnight launch event. "They definitely have a sense of humor."

Nintendo has already warned about limited Switch 2 availability, particularly in Japan where demand vastly exceeds supply. For the U.S. market, the company has prioritized Vietnamese-manufactured units to navigate potential tariffs affecting Chinese-made goods.

Launch shortages have become standard for successful consoles, and Switch 2 preorders have already been highly competitive. Essentially, the console selling out appears unavoidable.

These "Out of Stock" signs serve a practical purpose, helping retail staff manage inevitable customer inquiries about availability.

"Every retail employee knows they'll face multiple weekly customers yelling about checking 'the back,' as if stockrooms magically produce electronics," one commenter observed.

Ironically, announcing product shortages can effectively signal popularity—essentially serving as free marketing.

"This strategy creates consumer urgency," noted another fan. "Showing high demand triggers psychological FOMO—people feel compelled to buy."

In preparation for Switch 2's release, Nintendo has rolled out updates for both the original Switch and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Recent previews also showcased enhanced performance for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet running on the new hardware.

For fortunate early Switch 2 owners, Nintendo has shared crucial guidance about preserving the console's protective screen film.
