When Square Enix released the monster collecting RPG Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince on Switch last year, I was thoroughly captivated by it. Despite some technical hiccups, the game's charm and engaging gameplay loop distinguished it from other Dragon Quest spinoffs on the platform, placing it on par with the exceptional Dragon Quest Builders 2. While I anticipated a PC port similar to Dragon Quest Treasures, the possibility of a mobile release hadn't crossed my mind. Today, Square Enix announced that the Switch-exclusive Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince ($23.99) is set to launch on iOS, Android, and Steam on September 11th, complete with all prior DLC included, such as the Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince Digital Deluxe Edition content. The store pages confirm that the network mode for Online Battles, which allowed real-time player battles on the Switch version, will not be included in the Steam and mobile versions.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is currently available on Nintendo Switch, priced at $59.99 for the standard edition and $84.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition. Having thoroughly enjoyed it on Switch, I eagerly anticipate revisiting it for review on iPhone, iPad, and Steam Deck when it launches on the new platforms on September 11th. It's fantastic to see Square Enix swiftly bringing more Dragon Quest titles to mobile shortly after their original platform release. Given the delays typically seen between console and mobile releases for the series, such as with Dragon Quest Builders, I expected this title might not hit mobile until around 2027.
