FFXIV Mobile Version: Rumor Analysis

There's a buzz circulating the internet about the possibility of Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV), the renowned MMORPG, making its way to mobile devices. According to a gaming industry leak source, Kurakasis, Tencent Games and Square Enix are reportedly collaborating to bring this epic journey to your phone.

They’ve Got History

This wouldn't mark Square Enix's first venture into the mobile Final Fantasy arena, but past efforts have yielded mixed results. Take Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, for instance—it was decent but didn't quite knock fans' socks off. Then there's Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia, which unfortunately shut down last year. Bringing a full-fledged MMORPG like FFXIV to mobile is undoubtedly a bold move.

It's important to note that these rumors remain unverified. Square Enix has not made any formal announcements. However, there have been hints of collaboration between Square Enix and Tencent in the past. In 2018, the two companies discussed working together on content, and in 2021, then Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda mentioned ongoing discussions about projects with Tencent. So, this rumor isn't completely baseless.

Kurakasis' leak doesn't provide a timeline, leaving us to ponder whether this project is still in its early stages or even a guaranteed venture. We might be in for a long wait before an official announcement comes through.

The big question is: can Square Enix successfully adapt the complex mechanics of FFXIV to a mobile platform without compromising the depth that fans cherish? It will be fascinating to see how they approach this challenge. However, if the mobile version turns out to be a clunky, diluted version of the original, it could leave fans feeling let down.
