George R.R. Martin Backs Elden Ring Film

by Lucas Dec 10,2025

Author George R.R. Martin, famed for his work on Game of Thrones, has expressed enthusiasm for the recently announced Elden Ring film, indicating he feels optimistic about the new movie adaptation.

Having contributed to the backstory of FromSoftware's hit game, Martin voiced particular excitement that the cinematic adaptation of Elden Ring will be directed by Alex Garland, the filmmaker behind Ex Machina, Civil War, and Annihilation.

In a blog post, Martin praised Garland as an "outstanding director" and described production company A24 as "impressive." In sharing a YouTube video called "Why the Elden Ring Movie WON'T SUCK," Martin noted his present sentiment about the project is "hopeful."

While Martin clearly supports the film, no information suggests he is creatively involved. The author is currently balancing multiple commitments, such as an animated Hercules film revealed just last month.

News of Martin's participation in A Dozen Tough Jobs—a reimagining of the Greek myth set in the early 1900s—drew renewed frustration from Game of Thrones readers still anticipating The Winds of Winter.

Martin recently addressed this criticism, recognizing that "some fans will be upset by this announcement" and that many have "lost hope" he will ever complete the next installment, much less the saga's final novel that follows.

"I truly wish everyone could feel the same thrill I do about this film’s potential," Martin remarked regarding the Hercules project.

The Winds of Winter, the highly anticipated continuation of Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, remains unfinished with no confirmed release date. It has now been 14 years since A Dance with Dragons was published in 2011.

Details about the Elden Ring film remain sparse, though reports indicate Garland hopes to collaborate again with Heartstopper and Warfare star Kit Connor in a major role. The movie has not yet entered production, nor has a release window been announced.
