Girls’ Frontline 2 Devs Patented Rendering Method and Device

Protected Their Technology to Realistically Render Silk Stockings

Girls Frontline 2 Render Silk Stockings So Well, There's a Patent for It

MICA Team/Sunborn has secured a patent for their groundbreaking device and method used to render silk stockings in video games. The patent was initially filed in China on July 7, 2023, and was granted on June 6, 2024, giving them exclusive rights to their innovative object rendering technology.

Sunborn's patented rendering technique and tool are currently enhancing the visual experience in Girls’ Frontline 2: Exilium. As detailed on Google Patents, Sunborn's "silk stocking object rendering method and device" strikes a balance between hyper-realistic and cartoonish styles. This method also enhances the animation physics of the silk stockings.

Sunborn's approach to rendering silk stockings captures "the highlight feeling of real silk stockings," avoiding the pitfalls of making them look metallic or plastic-like. Their method involves multiple steps, such as utilizing specific codes, adjusting light reflection parameters, and fine-tuning color transitions. These efforts result in visually superior silk stockings for the female characters in Girls’ Frontline 2.

Fans of Girls’ Frontline have expressed their excitement over this development on a Twitter post by Cleista on December 8. They have praised Yuzhong, the CEO of Sunborn, and the company's artists for their meticulous attention to detail and dedication to achieving realistic-looking stockings. However, one user voiced concern, stating, "I always felt patenting stuff like this only hurts the game industry." Despite this, the majority of fans are thrilled with the enhanced appearance of the silk stockings in Girls’ Frontline 2 compared to the original game.

Sunborn's patent will remain in effect until July 7, 2043, preventing other companies from using this specific rendering method for realistic silk stockings for nearly twenty years. However, other developers can seek permission to use this technique, subject to Sunborn's approval.
