The rumor of a GTA 4 re-release originated from a post by Tez2, a well-known figure within the GTA community for leaking Rockstar information. Tez2 hinted at a possible GTA 4 port for modern systems this year, suggesting that this could be linked to Rockstar's recent decision to shut down a GTA 5 Liberty City Mod. However, it's important to note that Rockstar has not officially announced any plans for a GTA 4 re-release, and such a move would be surprising given the studio's current focus on Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6).

While Vermeij supports the idea of a GTA 4 remaster, the feasibility of such a project amidst the development of GTA 6 remains uncertain. Rockstar could potentially outsource the remaster to another studio, as it did with Red Dead Redemption. However, releasing a GTA 4 remaster in 2025, close to GTA 6's anticipated fall 2025 launch, might not make strategic sense as it could split the audience's attention from the highly anticipated new title.
Additionally, some fans speculate that Liberty City, the setting of GTA 4 inspired by New York City, might appear in GTA 6, either at launch or as part of post-launch DLC. GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida, which is based on Florida and includes Vice City, Rockstar's version of Miami.
