Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the follow-up to Hideo Kojima’s 2019 breakthrough Death Stranding, earned strong praise upon release. Critics called it “incredibly exciting and original” and “bold work that deserves to be encouraged,” as noted in our review. This has left many fans eager for a potential third installment. Yet for now, Kojima has no plans to develop Death Stranding 3—despite already having a concept drafted.
He shared this during an interview in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of the Death Stranding 2 World Strand Tour. When questioned about a possible Death Stranding 3, he responded:
“I’m not planning to do that at the moment, because the ending of Death Stranding 2 was my finale for both 1 and 2. But I already wrote the concept of DS3, so I have it saved. I hope someone else might create it for me.”
This isn’t the first time Kojima has hinted that others might carry on his creative legacy. Back in May, he revealed he’s been reflecting more deeply on his own mortality, which led him to prepare a USB drive “like a will” outlining the future of his studio, Kojima Productions, should he pass away.
“I gave a USB stick with all my ideas on it to my personal assistant, kind of like a will,” he said. “Perhaps they could keep making things after I’m gone at Kojima Productions… This is a fear for me: what happens to Kojima Productions after I’m gone? I don’t want them to just manage our existing IP.”
While a Death Stranding 3 isn’t on the horizon anytime soon, Kojima’s creative output remains abundant. A live-action film adaptation of Death Stranding is in development with A24, and he’s currently deep in work on two new games: the horror title OD, made in collaboration with Xbox, and the Metal Gear successor Physint.
