Marvel is bringing back a villain from the very first MCU film, Iron Man, for its upcoming series, Vision Quest. Deadline reports that Faran Tahir will reprise his role as Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, the leader of the Afghanistan terrorist group that held Tony Stark captive in the film's opening. This marks a return for the character nearly two decades after his initial appearance in the 2008 film. Similar to Samuel Sterns' reappearance in Captain America: Brave New World, Hamidmi al-Wazar's return in Vision Quest, starring Paul Bettany as White Vision, adds another layer to the MCU's ever-expanding narrative. A release date for Vision Quest has yet to be announced.
While initially portrayed as the leader of a generic terrorist group, Hamidmi al-Wazar's backstory was significantly expanded in Phase 4. Subtle hints connected his group to the Ten Rings, a connection further solidified in 2021's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This retroactive inclusion establishes Hamidmi al-Wazar as a Ten Rings commander, potentially linking Vision Quest to the events of Shang-Chi.
However, Vision Quest might also explore the more unusual aspects of the MCU, similar to how Deadpool & Wolverine revisited elements from the previous Fox Marvel universe. The series also reportedly features the return of James Spader as Ultron, though details remain scarce.
