Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern Is a 'Jerk' In James Gunn's Upcoming Superman: 'You Don't Have To Be Good'

James Gunn's upcoming Superman reboot introduces a new take on Green Lantern, played by Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. Fillion describes his portrayal as a departure from previous iterations, emphasizing Gardner's less-than-charming personality. "He's a jerk!" Fillion stated in a recent interview with TV Guide. He explained that Gardner's fearlessness, a key Green Lantern trait, doesn't necessitate goodness. This allows Fillion to explore a more selfish, self-serving side of the character, a refreshing change for the actor. Gardner's overconfidence is also highlighted, with Fillion suggesting it might even be considered a superpower—though one that mistakenly believes it could challenge Superman.

This new Superman film marks the beginning of a rebooted DC Cinematic Universe, the first chapter in the "Gods and Monsters" saga. The Green Lantern Corps aren't solely featured in this film, however. HBO is concurrently producing a Lanterns series, showcasing other members of the alliance, including Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), slated for release in 2026.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Directed and written by James Gunn, the film is scheduled for theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
