Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a surprise double-whammy for fans of the Ninja Gaiden franchise: the reveal of Ninja Gaiden 4 and the release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja," and these announcements certainly lived up to the hype.
Ninja Gaiden 4: A New Generation of Ninjas
Developed collaboratively by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks the series' return after a 13-year hiatus. This direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3 promises the same brutally challenging yet rewarding gameplay the series is known for. The game introduces a new protagonist, Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to become a Master Ninja.
Art Director Tomoko Nishii (PlatinumGames) describes Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the series' iconic hero. While Yakumo takes center stage, Ryu Hayabusa remains a crucial part of the narrative, serving as a formidable opponent and a benchmark for Yakumo's growth. Ryu will also be playable.
The new combat system blends the signature Ninja Gaiden brutality with PlatinumGames' signature speed and dynamism. Yakumo utilizes two distinct fighting styles: Raven Style and the newly introduced Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style. While different from Ryu's style, the developers assure fans the action will remain true to the core Ninja Gaiden experience.
Currently 70-80% complete and in the polishing phase, Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for a Fall 2025 release on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remastered Classic
Responding to fan demand following the 2021 release of the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 title. Now available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5 (and included with Xbox Game Pass), this updated version features additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2: Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel.
Team Ninja aims to deliver an experience that satisfies both veteran players and newcomers, presenting a modern action game experience while staying true to the original.
This announcement marks a significant moment for the Ninja Gaiden franchise, promising a thrilling return for longtime fans and a compelling entry point for newcomers. The combination of a new game and a remastered classic ensures a satisfying experience for all. Both titles are available for pre-order or addition to your wishlist now.
