Hori's Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera offers a resolution of just 480p, significantly lower than the 1080p resolution of Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera. This detail was confirmed by the UK My Nintendo Store, which provided the following specifications:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Camera - Video capture quality: 1080p.
  • Piranha Plant Camera for Nintendo Switch 2 - Camera resolution: 640 × 480.

Priced lower than Nintendo's $49.99 camera, Hori's Piranha Plant camera is officially licensed by Nintendo. It's worth noting that the Nintendo Switch 2 supports not only its official camera but also any compatible USB-C camera. Both the Piranha Plant and Nintendo's camera are set to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.

The Piranha Plant camera offers a unique feature: the part containing the webcam can be detached from the pot, allowing you to place it directly on top of the Switch 2 for enhanced portability—a feature absent in Nintendo's own camera. Additionally, you can close the plant's mouth to cover the lens.

Hori’s Piranha Plant camera is just 480p resolution.

The gaming community expressed surprise and amusement at the Piranha Plant camera's low resolution. Reddit user Ramen536Pie questioned, "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025? That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost found it humorous, suggesting, "Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Pokemonfitness1420 remarked, "Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?"

During last week's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2's GameChat functionality, activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature enables players to watch each other play the same or different games and use a camera to see each other, facilitated by a built-in microphone that performs reliably across various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is designed to be an all-encompassing multiplayer feature, potentially marking Nintendo's most successful online endeavor in decades.
