Nintendo Teases New 3D Mario for Switch 2: 'Stay Tuned'

by Chloe May 13,2025

Nintendo has been dropping hints that a new 3D Mario game could be on the horizon, stirring excitement among fans. In a recent CNN interview, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser addressed the longing for a new mainline Mario game. Although he didn't confirm a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, his comments suggest that fans might not have to wait too long for an announcement.

"Stay tuned," Bowser advised. "You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform."

While Bowser's words are not a definitive promise, they offer hope to those disappointed by the absence of a new 3D Mario title in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. Earlier this month, Nintendo unveiled its sequel to the hybrid console, showcasing titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World, but a traditional 3D Mario platformer was missing from the reveal.

The last flagship Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, hit shelves in October 2017, shortly after the original Switch's debut. It's been nearly eight years since then, and while games like Donkey Kong Bananza may tide fans over, it's not the Super Mario Odyssey 2 many were eager to see. Given Mario's pivotal role in Nintendo's extensive catalog, it would be surprising if a new 3D Mario game didn't surface soon.
