Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

by Lucy Feb 28,2025

Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, it's back with a completely revamped port from developer Hemisphere Games.

For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning puzzle where you absorb smaller organisms while avoiding becoming prey yourself. Its simple yet engaging gameplay has earned it widespread praise. Now, for the first time in years, Android users can experience this micro-organic battle royale on modern operating systems.

Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that initial Android development, done in collaboration with Apportable, stalled after Apportable's closure. This resulted in Osmos' removal from Google Play due to incompatibility with current Android systems (it only ran on obsolete 32-bit systems). The game's triumphant return is thanks to a completely rebuilt port.

If you need further convincing, watch the gameplay trailer above. Osmos' innovative mechanics have influenced countless other games, and its absence from the social media landscape before its resurgence is almost a missed opportunity. It would undoubtedly be a TikTok sensation.

Osmos offers a nostalgic experience, reminiscent of a time when mobile gaming seemed limitless. While it's a unique throwback, there are many other excellent mobile puzzle games available. Explore our list of the top 25 best puzzle games for iOS and Android for more brain-bending challenges.
