Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Series from Jon Favreau in the Works for Disney+

by George Mar 14,2025

Disney veteran Jon Favreau is teaming up with Disney+ to bring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to the small screen in a new series. Favreau, known for his expertise in blending live-action and animation, will write and produce this exciting project. While plot details and casting remain under wraps, the announcement promises a fresh take on this iconic Disney character.

Oswald’s history with Disney is a fascinating one. Created by Walt Disney himself, Oswald was the studio's original mascot, starring in 26 silent cartoons from 1927 to 1928. A rights dispute with Universal led to his departure, a pivotal moment in Disney history that ultimately paved the way for Mickey Mouse. Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald in 2006, and in 2022, released a new short film featuring the character after a 95-year absence. This new series signifies a significant step forward, showcasing Oswald as more than just a nostalgic figure. Although a release date hasn't been announced, the project is clearly underway.

Favreau’s involvement with Disney extends beyond Oswald. He's a key figure in the Star Wars universe, contributing to The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka. His contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe span 15 years, and he directed the 2019 Lion King remake. He's also set to direct The Mandalorian and Grogu's theatrical release in 2026.

Interestingly, Oswald's recent appearance in Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, a horror film starring Ernie Hudson, was released in 2023, just a year after the character entered the public domain. This new Disney+ series, however, marks a distinct and official return for Oswald under the Disney banner.
