The PS Portal, Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory for the PS5 console, resembles an extended split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen at its center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device, allowing you to stream games from your console at up to 60fps. The controller retains the same advanced features as the DualSense, such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface that substitutes for the DualSense's touchpad. You can even use the Portal outside your home, provided you have a stable and fast internet connection. Remember, the PS Portal is not a standalone device; it's strictly a remote player for the PlayStation 5, requiring a PS5 to operate.
Excitingly, you no longer need a PS5 to enjoy games on the PS Portal. Sony has rolled out a feature enabling Portal owners to stream games directly from its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service. This means you can connect the Portal either to your PS5 or directly to Sony’s cloud servers, thanks to recent quality of life beta updates launched in April. Opting for the latter gives you access to over 120 games, including hits like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. "The PlayStation Portal has truly surprised me, turning my initial skepticism into genuine appreciation. It offers a far superior experience compared to using a phone with an attached controller, and it performs much better than expected. I appreciate the flexibility it provides to play my PS5 games from anywhere with a decent WiFi signal, especially when the rest of my family is using the TV for other gaming systems. It's important to remember that the Portal isn't a standalone device and requires a PlayStation 5 to function. The main drawbacks are its inability to connect to WiFi networks that require a web browser for login and the lack of Bluetooth support for audio. Despite these issues, it's an excellent solution for PlayStation Remote Play, and if it weren't for these limitations, I'd consider it a must-have for every PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming or needs to share the household TV."
