Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see a significant shakeup in their gaming library, with 22 titles being removed on May 20, including high-profile games like Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of Sony's first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. This move will particularly affect fans of these classic PS3 games, as they are no longer available for purchase on the PlayStation Store, making the PS Plus Premium streaming service the final frontier for experiencing them—unless you own both games and a functional PS3.
PlayStation Plus is a comprehensive online gaming service for PlayStation users, offering a range of benefits including free monthly games, limited-time trials, online multiplayer access, and exclusive member discounts. Additionally, Extra and Premium members enjoy access to a catalog of hundreds of current and classic games, making it a treasure trove for avid gamers.
As highlighted by Push Square, the removal of these 22 games is particularly noteworthy due to the inclusion of two iconic first-party Sony PS3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, from the PS Plus Premium library. These games were added to the service at the end of 2024 and are now being removed less than a year later.

The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac Games, offers an alternate history first-person shooter experience. Following their work on the Ratchet and Clank series, Insomniac released three Resistance games for the PS3 before shifting focus to other projects like Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles. Despite efforts to revive the series with a potential Resistance 4, the project never came to fruition, leaving the franchise dormant.
Sony's decision to remove first-party games from the service, while unusual, isn't unprecedented. The removal of both Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West in August 2024 caused quite a stir. However, unlike the Horizon titles, which remained available for purchase, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will be entirely unavailable on modern consoles once they leave PS Plus.
Interestingly, not all Resistance games are being removed; Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be accessible through the service. Additionally, another first-party title, InFamous: Second Son, will also be departing from the PS Plus lineup.
Insomniac's founder and outgoing president, Ted Price, recently shared that there was a significant effort to develop Resistance 4, but the project ultimately did not receive the necessary approval. This fate mirrors that of other once-popular series like Guerrilla's Killzone, which has also been left behind.
