The previous generation Sony XM4 was already an outstanding headphone, but the XM5 introduces key improvements in noise cancellation and comfort. The XM5 is equipped with a second processor and twice the number of microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The earcups have been redesigned to fit more snugly on the ear, creating a better seal and, as a result, more effective passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation in the XM5 is noticeably superior to that of the XM4 and virtually any other noise-canceling headset in its price range.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 also features a sleeker redesign with a new headband adjustment style. The band is wider than before, which helps distribute weight more evenly, and the earcup padding is now made from a luxurious synthetic leather that's softer and more comfortable. You can wear these headphones for hours without discomfort. One minor downside is that the XM5 can no longer be folded inward, only swiveled, making it slightly less compact.
