Marvel's Spider-Man 2: PC Arrival and PSN Requirement
January 30, 2025: PC Release Date Confirmed
Announced at New York Comic Con's Marvel Games showcase, the PC version promises a top-tier experience. Developed and optimized by Nixxes Software in collaboration with Insomniac Games, PlayStation, and Marvel Games, expect ray tracing, ultrawide monitor support, and extensive graphical customization options. Nixxes, known for their excellent PlayStation-to-PC ports (Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima), ensures a smooth transition.
"Bringing the Spider-Man games to PC with Insomniac and Marvel Games has been fantastic," stated Nixxes' Community Manager, Julian Huijbregts. Insomniac's Mike Fitzgerald added that the PC port prioritizes a seamless experience on the platform.
While keyboard and mouse support and ultrawide compatibility are key features, DualSense controller features like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback won't be replicated.
The PC release boasts all post-launch content updates from the PS5 version, including twelve new suits (featuring Symbiote Suit styles), New Game+, "Ultimate Levels," enhanced Photo Mode, new time-of-day options, and post-game achievements. The Digital Deluxe Edition offers even more. However, no new story content will be added.
PSN Account Requirement: A Point of Contention
⚫︎ Screenshot taken from Helldivers 2's SteamDB PageA significant drawback is the requirement of a PlayStation Network (PSN) account, a trend emerging with PlayStation PC ports. This excludes players in regions without PSN access, raising concerns about accessibility. While Sony previously reversed a similar PSN requirement for Helldivers 2, the issue remains a point of frustration for many gamers.
Titles like God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, the Until Dawn remake, and Ghost of Tsushima also necessitate PSN accounts, prompting questions about the necessity of this linkage for single-player games.
Despite this, the PC release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 marks a significant step for Sony, bringing its acclaimed franchise to a wider audience. While the PSN requirement needs addressing, the effort to expand beyond PlayStation consoles is commendable. Whether you're a veteran or a newcomer, January 2025 can't arrive soon enough. Game8 awarded the PS5 version an 88, praising it as a superb sequel to an already excellent Spider-Man game.
