"Switch 2 to Sell Millions at Launch, Analysts Say; June Release Eyed"

by Christian Apr 22,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2's price has become a focal point of interest within the gaming community. According to analysts speaking to IGN, the next-generation console is expected to launch at around $400. This prediction is supported by a Bloomberg report that aligns with the $400 price range, based on insights from Japan-focused analysts. However, another analyst suggested to Bloomberg that Nintendo might consider a higher price point, potentially reaching up to $499. Despite these varying price predictions, analysts are confident that the Switch 2 will experience a monumental launch, possibly becoming the biggest console launch in history, regardless of its cost.

Tokyo-based analyst Serkan Toto told Bloomberg, "They will sell boatloads of Switch 2 in the first months in particular, almost regardless of the price." The anticipated success of the Switch 2 is largely attributed to its compelling lineup of launch titles. Toto expects a new Mario Kart, hinted at by Nintendo during the Switch 2 reveal, a new 3D Mario game, and the already announced Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4 to be released within the first year. Additionally, Toto anticipates strong third-party support, including titles like Call of Duty from Activision.

The excitement around the Switch 2 is further fueled by a long list of rumored third-party titles. In an interview with IGN, Civilization 7 developer Firaxis expressed intrigue about the Switch 2’s Joy-Con mouse mode. French game and accessory maker Nacon, known for titles like Greedfall 2, Test Drive Unlimited, and RoboCop: Rogue City, has confirmed they have games ready for the Switch 2. Rumors also suggest that the long-awaited Hollow Knight: Silksong could be coming to the platform. Last month, EA indicated that games like Madden, FC, and The Sims would be well-suited for the Switch 2. However, Activision has yet to officially announce its plans for the Switch 2, and Nintendo has not commented on the Bloomberg report.

Speculation about the release date of the Switch 2 increasingly points to June 2025, with games media and online sources echoing this timeline. Robin Zhu, a Japan-based analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, told Bloomberg that the Switch 2 is expected to launch in June with an initial inventory of 6-8 million units. If Nintendo manages to sell out this stock quickly, the Switch 2 could surpass the sales records of its predecessor and the PlayStation 4 and 5.

Concerns have been raised about the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff war on the price of the Nintendo Switch 2. The Trump administration's new tariffs on goods from China, Canada, and Mexico could affect the price and availability of video games and consoles. However, Bloomberg noted that the Switch 2 will be assembled in Vietnam, a major U.S. trading partner, as well as China, potentially mitigating some of these risks.

While many details about the Switch 2 remain undisclosed, Nintendo has planned a Direct for April 2 to reveal more about the console. Earlier in January, Nintendo revealed the Switch 2 with a brief trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, specifics such as other games and the purpose of the new Joy-Con button were not disclosed, though the Joy-Con mouse theory gained attention.

Last month, a Nintendo patent suggested that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down. This feature, enabled by magnets rather than the rails used in the original Switch, could allow players to customize the placement of buttons and ports. If implemented, this flipping capability could introduce new gameplay mechanics, adding to the excitement surrounding the Switch 2.
