Xbox Revives Friend Requests: A Decade-Long Wait Ends

Xbox Friend Requests Return

Xbox has finally reinstated the much-requested friend request system, ending a ten-year absence. This highly anticipated feature returns to the platform, addressing a long-standing community plea.

A Welcome Return for Xbox Users

Xbox's announcement, shared via blog post and X (formerly Twitter), marks a significant shift from the previous decade's follower-based social system. "We're thrilled to announce the return of friend requests," stated Xbox Senior Product Manager Klarke Clayton. The new system allows for two-way friend connections, providing users with greater control and clarity. Friend requests can now be sent, accepted, or declined via the console's People tab.

The previous "follow" system, while fostering an open social environment, lacked the direct connection and control offered by friend requests. The lack of a clear distinction between friends and followers often led to confusion.

The "follow" feature will remain, enabling users to track content creators or communities without reciprocal connection. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system. According to Clayton, "You'll remain friends with those who added you, and continue following those who didn't."

Microsoft prioritizes user privacy. The updated system includes enhanced privacy and notification settings, allowing users to control friend requests, follower requests, and notifications from the Xbox settings menu.

The news has been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback on social media, with users expressing relief and excitement. Some users humorously admitted to not even realizing the feature was missing. While the friend request system caters to social players, it doesn't diminish the enjoyment of solo gaming.

Positive User Reaction

Although a precise release date is yet to be announced, the feature is currently in testing with Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC. Xbox's tweet promises further details regarding the full rollout later this year. Join the Xbox Insiders program to experience the revived friend request system early.
