Digital Transformation of Devarattam: A Digital Tribute
This application, developed as part of the "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" project, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the art of Devarattam. It honors the contributions of Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman (retired teacher), Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimamani Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, recipients of the KALAIMAMANI, KALAIMAMANI, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards, respectively. The app also pays tribute to my Guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and the esteemed legends of Devarattam.
The primary goal of this app is to showcase Devarattam and its accomplished artists. It provides comprehensive information on this traditional Tamil Nadu folk dance, including its history and evolution. Devarattam, typically performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, both historically and in the present day, involves a complex series of steps. While it can include 32 to 72 steps, 32 form the foundational sequence, with variations building upon this base.
Devarattam dancers gracefully execute these steps, each holding a kerchief and wearing anklets (salangai), while simultaneously playing the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument integral to the performance.
