Amazon's Android Appstore to Close its Doors
Fans of Amazon's Android Appstore will soon be disappointed. TechCrunch reports Amazon is shutting down its Android app store on August 20th, 2024. While the store has been operational for over a decade, the decision marks the end of an era for many developers and users.
The closure doesn't affect the Amazon Appstore's presence on Fire TV and Fire Tablets. However, Android apps previously installed from the store may not receive future updates or support, according to Amazon's support page.
The Irony of a Closing App Store
The timing is somewhat ironic, coinciding with the rise of alternative app stores. Amazon's Appstore never achieved widespread popularity, likely due to a lack of compelling features to attract users and developers. Competitors like the Epic Games Store, with its free games program, offer significant advantages.
This closure serves as a reminder that even major companies can't guarantee long-term support for all ventures.
