Final Fantasy IX Marks Quarter-Century Milestone
Anniversary Website Goes Live

Square Enix has launched a special anniversary portal celebrating Final Fantasy IX's 25th year, confirming plans for commemorative merchandise and collaborations. The company promises additional announcements as the anniversary approaches.
The website features an extensive anniversary merchandise lineup including collectible figures, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtrack CDs, and illustrated storybooks. Fans can expect more reveals throughout the celebration period.
Originally debuting on PlayStation on July 7, 2000, Final Fantasy IX has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. The game received multiple re-releases, including a 2012 Japanese collector's edition, mobile remasters in 2016, and modern console ports between 2017-2019 across PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC platforms.
Speculation Grows Over Potential Remake and Silent Anime Project

The anniversary launch has reignited rumors about a possible FFIX remake, especially following the commercial success of Final Fantasy VII's remake series. Ranked fourth in NHK's 2019 poll of Japan's favorite Final Fantasy titles, the classic RPG remains a strong candidate for modernization despite no official confirmation.
Attention has also turned to the long-silent animated adaptation, "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy," announced in 2021. The proposed series would continue Vivi's legacy through his descendants, set ten years after the original game's events.
Production complications arose when French studio Cyber Group Studios, originally handling distribution and merchandise rights, filed for bankruptcy in late 2024. However, interest from potential buyers like United Smile and Newen Studios suggests the anime project may still see completion under new management.
