GameCube Fans Excited by New Nintendo Filings for Switch 2

by Eric Mar 26,2025

Exciting news for Nintendo fans: recent filings hint at the possibility of a new GameCube controller designed for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. As reported by Nintendo Life, an FCC filing for a "game controller" aligns with the Switch 2, suggesting it could be a wireless Bluetooth controller. Enthusiasts on Famiboards have dug deeper, identifying a label location on the controller that matches the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick. This has sparked speculation that the controller might be used for playing GameCube classics via the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service.

While it's possible this could be a Switch 2 Pro Controller, the current buzz leans towards its integration with Nintendo’s Switch Online service, which already supports wireless classic controllers for retro gaming. This development has fans eagerly anticipating a potential GameCube library on the service. Although Nintendo has previously focused on NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy games for its subscription service, the addition of GameCube games on the Switch 2 could be a significant expansion.

The Switch 2 was unveiled earlier this year with a trailer highlighting its backwards compatibility and a new second USB-C port. However, many details such as additional games and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button remain undisclosed, though theories about a Joy-Con mouse feature have gained some traction.

Recent patents suggest that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down, utilizing gyro mechanics similar to those in smartphones without screen locks. This design, featuring magnets instead of the original Switch's rails, allows for more flexible button and port placement, potentially introducing innovative gameplay mechanics.

Analysts predict the Switch 2 will be priced around $400 to $500, with a potential release in June. While much remains unknown, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2 to unveil more about the console. In the meantime, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered on the current Nintendo Switch.
