Hasbro has unveiled its ambitious plan to bring the iconic card game Magic: The Gathering to audiences worldwide through a variety of screen adaptations. In a strategic partnership with Legendary Entertainment, the company is set to develop a comprehensive shared universe encompassing both movies and TV series. The initial focus will be on launching a feature film, marking the first step in this expansive project.
Legendary Entertainment, known for blockbuster hits like Dune and the Godzilla franchise including Godzilla vs. Kong, as well as Detective Pikachu, is excited about this venture. "We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering," stated the chairman of worldwide production at Legendary.
While specifics remain somewhat unclear, it appears that Legendary's film and TV projects will stand separate from the previously announced Magic: The Gathering animated series slated for Netflix. However, there is a possibility that the plans may have evolved, potentially integrating the animated series into this broader shared universe.
Magic: The Gathering, originally launched by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, has evolved into one of the world's most beloved trading card games. Wizards of the Coast became a part of Hasbro following its acquisition in 1999.
Hasbro has a rich history of transforming its popular products into cinematic experiences, with successful adaptations like G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Dungeons and Dragons. The company is currently developing several new projects, including additional G.I. Joe films, a fresh take on Power Rangers, and a Beyblade movie.
