MGS Timeline: How to Play Metal Gear Solid Games in Chronological Order

by Matthew Apr 25,2025

The Metal Gear series, masterminded by Hideo Kojima and Konami, has given gamers some of the most unforgettable moments in video game history. From Snake's tense elevator ride to the rainy cliffs of Shadow Moses to the intense showdown between student and mentor in the climactic scenes of Snake Eater, the adventures of Solid Snake and Big Boss have captivated players across multiple console generations. These titles have not only pushed the boundaries of what video games can achieve narratively and creatively but have also solidified their place as pivotal releases in the gaming medium.

In 2015, it seemed the saga might have reached its conclusion with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, as Hideo Kojima parted ways with Konami to form his own studio. However, Konami has since breathed new life into the franchise with re-releases and remakes, such as the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater set for release later this year. As new players dive into this world of covert operations, shadowy government conspiracies, and iconic characters with cool eyepatches, understanding the series' chronological order can enhance their experience. Whether you're a newcomer or a returning fan, here’s how to navigate the Metal Gear Solid series.

19 ImagesExcluding remakes, ports, or remasters, the Metal Gear series comprises 17 games: 11 mainline titles, five handheld entries, and one mobile game. However, not all of these are considered canon, as some deviate from the main storyline, creating alternate timelines and unique takes on the universe.

For instance, Metal Gear Survive (2018) unfolds in an apocalyptic world plagued by a zombie virus and is not part of the main canon. The PSP's Metal Gear: Acid and Metal Gear: Acid 2 also venture into alternate timelines, telling new stories. The Game Boy Color's Metal Gear: Ghost Babel presents an alternate-universe sequel that disregards the events of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, thus falling outside the official timeline. Lastly, Metal Gear Mobile and Snake’s Revenge have been deemed non-canon by both the community and Hideo Kojima himself.

This leaves us with 11 games that form the core Metal Gear Saga, spanning from the 1960s to the late 2010s. Let's explore the chronological order of these main storyline games.

Which Metal Gear Should You Play First?

For those looking to dive into the entire saga, we recommend starting with the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 released in 2023, which includes the definitive versions of Metal Gear Solid 1–3. For those who prefer a more modern entry point or have less patience for older games, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain offers a contemporary starting point.
