A Minecraft Movie has shattered box office records, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie to claim the title of the biggest domestic debut for a video game adaptation. Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, who also appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, A Minecraft Movie raked in an astounding $157 million in North America alone. This surpasses the $146 million domestic opening weekend haul of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in April 2023, which still holds the record for the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.
Globally, A Minecraft Movie added another $144 million from international markets, bringing its worldwide opening weekend total to $301 million. With a production budget of $150 million, not including marketing costs, the film is already showing signs of profitability for Warner Bros.
A Minecraft Movie is inspired by Mojang's Minecraft, recognized as the best-selling video game of all time. Owned by Microsoft, this sandbox game continues to be one of the world's most popular, and it has released movie tie-in DLC to coincide with the film's launch.
IGN gave A Minecraft Movie a 6/10, noting that "Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess brings a surprisingly specific and funny comic spin to A Minecraft Movie's kid-friendly adventure, particularly in its less frenetic first half."

In other news, Disney’s live-action Snow White appears to be heading towards disaster, having earned only $168.4 million globally ($77.5 million domestically and $90.9 million internationally) after a lackluster opening weekend. With a hefty $250 million production budget, a miraculous comeback akin to Mufasa: The Lion King seems unlikely.
