Nintendo Responds to Switch 2 Leak Rumors

Summary

  • In a rare move, Nintendo has commented on Genki's Switch 2 leak that emerged from CES 2025.
  • A company representative stated that Nintendo is not an official participant in this year's CES, so none of the Switch 2 imagery from the show should be considered official.

Nintendo has issued a rare statement regarding the recent leaks of the Switch 2, which surfaced from CES 2025. The company clarified that the images circulating online are not official, marking a significant departure from Nintendo's usual silence on product leaks.

Leaks about the Switch 2 have been rampant since late 2024, likely triggered by the console entering mass production around that time. The latest leak came from accessory manufacturer Genki, which displayed a supposed replica of the Switch successor at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. These images quickly spread across social media platforms.

Responding to inquiries from the Sankei Shimbun, a Nintendo representative confirmed, "It is not official," referring to the images and videos of Genki's Switch 2 replica. The company further emphasized that it is not participating in CES 2025, meaning any Switch 2 imagery from the event cannot be considered official promotional material.

Official or Not, Genki's Nintendo Switch 2 Replica Could Be Accurate

While Nintendo did not comment on the accuracy of Genki's Switch 2 replica, it is possible that the dummy device closely represents the upcoming console. This belief is supported by the fact that the replica aligns with recent leaks and rumors. The replica is slightly larger than the original Switch and includes an additional button labeled "C" below the right Joy-Con's home button, though its function remains a mystery.

Genki CEO Eddie Tsai, while unable to provide details on the C button, shared other alleged features of the Switch 2. He claimed that the console's Joy-Cons will attach magnetically rather than using sliding rails and can be used like a mouse, corroborating information from other sources.

Nintendo has previously announced plans to unveil the Switch successor within its fiscal year 2024, ending on March 31, 2025, leaving just 80 days for the reveal. The console is not expected to be available in stores until at least the second quarter of 2025. Rumors suggest that the Switch 2 could be priced around $399.
