The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and is expected to be a sought-after item. To ensure that genuine Switch enthusiasts get their hands on the console, Nintendo is implementing a strategic pre-order system on the official My Nintendo Store. Here's how it works:
Nintendo Account holders can register their interest in pre-ordering a Nintendo Switch 2 system along with selected accessories. Once their turn comes up, they will receive an invitation email, which remains valid for 72 hours. However, there's a crucial requirement: to be eligible, you must have been an active user on your old Switch with a minimum of 50 hours of gameplay and a Nintendo Switch Online membership of at least 12 months, as of April 2, 2025.
The invitations are prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis and are non-transferable, sent directly to the email address linked with the interested Nintendo Account. There's a one-per-account limit on the system and each accessory during the invitation period. You can choose between a base Nintendo Switch 2 or one bundled with Mario Kart World.
After placing an order, the console will be shipped, though Nintendo notes that release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times. These measures are designed to ensure that those purchasing a Switch 2 through this method are genuinely interested in using it themselves, rather than reselling it online.

Scalping has been a persistent issue with new product releases, as seen with the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Valve's successful queue system for the Steam Deck, which linked purchases to Steam accounts and checked account creation dates, seems to have inspired Nintendo's approach with the My Nintendo Store.
While there will be other avenues to acquire a Switch 2, this pre-order system aims to help dedicated Switch 1 owners secure their new console without the hassle of launch day chaos.
