Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the chances of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signal the end of the character's journey. In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds remarked, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." This statement comes in the wake of speculation fueled by Deadpool's expressed desire to join the Avengers in the successful film Deadpool & Wolverine.
The cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday last month included several veteran X-Men actors, such as Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, indicating a significant role for the X-Men in the film. Grammer, who played Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, made his MCU debut in The Marvels' post-credits scene, while Stewart appeared as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Despite the heavy X-Men presence, Reynolds was notably absent from the confirmed list of stars for Avengers: Doomsday, which did include Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Reynolds hinted at a possible surprise appearance as Deadpool in a supporting role, citing the positive fan reaction to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, he emphasized that a formal promotion to the Avengers or X-Men would not be suitable for Deadpool's character arc.
Looking ahead, Reynolds is currently working on a new project that he described as involving an "ensemble." While keeping details under wraps, he expressed a preference for keeping Deadpool isolated, suggesting that future projects might continue to feature a mix of cameos and ensemble casts, similar to Deadpool & Wolverine. Potential characters for future appearances could include Snipes' Blade, Tatum's Gambit, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23.
As for Avengers: Doomsday, details remain sparse beyond the cast announcements. Anthony Mackie, set to reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, has expressed optimism about the film, promising it will deliver the classic Marvel feel. Other cast members, including Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, have also shared their excitement. An alleged set photo leak stirred further speculation, particularly about potential bad news for the X-Men. Additionally, fans have speculated about Oscar Isaac's possible appearance as Moon Knight, fueled by his recent withdrawal from Star Wars Celebration due to scheduling changes.
Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has confirmed that the Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal was not exhaustive, stating, "We revealed many, not all," during a video call at CinemaCon, leaving room for more surprises as the project progresses.
