Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, the acclaimed director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is still hard at work on his upcoming Star Wars film. Despite the mystery surrounding the project, writer Jonathan Tropper has shared some encouraging words with Screen Rant, expressing his excitement and hinting that the film might be closer to release than we think.
Details about the movie remain scarce, but we do know it will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed this timeline in an interview with Deadline, stating, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This makes Levy's film the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
Kennedy also clarified that Levy's film will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she added. Another exciting detail is that Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star in the film.
Tropper's positive outlook suggests that progress is being made, though fans will need to exercise patience as the film is not expected until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.
Disney has been relatively quiet on the Star Wars front since the release of the critically mixed Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. The studio has cancelled several projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Moreover, a Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's release calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen some shifts, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. However, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
In addition, X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which is not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, contrary to earlier rumors. Meanwhile, the next Star Wars content to hit screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode.
