Gaming hardware giant ASUS has unveiled a tantalizing teaser hinting at what could be the much-rumored Xbox-branded handheld device. The ASUS Republic of Gamers X/Twitter account showcased a glimpse of its "little robot friend" working on something exciting, revealing both a Republic of Gamers (ROG) Xbox controller and a handheld system.
This development comes on the heels of last month's IGN report on Microsoft's ambitious video game hardware plans, which include a next-generation Xbox slated for 2027 and an Xbox-branded gaming handheld potentially launching later in 2025.
The ASUS teaser provides a clear view of the handheld's button layout, featuring the familiar Xbox configuration with Y, B, A, and X buttons, as opposed to the PlayStation's triangle, circle, cross, and square, or Nintendo's X, A, B, and Y. The device also sports a D-pad, two thumbsticks, and four smaller additional buttons, though these are less discernible in the teaser.
Adding fuel to the speculation, the official Xbox account playfully acknowledged the teaser with a wide-eyed gif, hinting at an upcoming reveal.
While specifics remain scarce, the monitor in the teaser lists potential key features of the handheld, including "Marathon stamina, more capacity, faster speeds," and a "fresh look!" These hints give us a glimpse into what the device's unique selling points might be.
In January, Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s VP of ‘Next Generation,’ told The Verge about Microsoft's plans to merge Xbox and Windows experiences for PC gaming handhelds produced by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like ASUS, Lenovo, and Razer.
Although this Xbox-branded gaming handheld isn't a Microsoft-made console, the company is reportedly gearing up to launch its own in 2027, alongside its next-gen Xbox. Microsoft gaming boss Phil Spencer has hinted that a first-party Xbox handheld is still years away.
The successor to the Xbox Series X is reportedly in full production and expected to launch in two years, aligning with Xbox president Sarah Bond's recent statement that Microsoft is "moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware," aiming for the biggest technological leap in a generation.
Amidst the buzz about future consoles, Netflix's President of Games, Alain Tascan, has suggested a future generation that might rely less on gaming consoles. However, major players like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo continue to push forward with new hardware. Nintendo's highly anticipated Switch 2 is set to be showcased in a Nintendo Direct on April 2, where fans eagerly await details on its features, release date, and pre-order information.
