Borderlands Hit with Review Bombing Following EULA Update

by Aiden Jun 01,2025

Fans of the Borderlands series are currently facing a wave of review-bombing on platforms like Steam, triggered by recent changes to Take-Two Interactive's End User License Agreement (EULA). These alterations have sparked widespread concern among players who perceive them as invasive, particularly regarding privacy and gameplay restrictions.

Steam ratings for titles like *Borderlands*, *Borderlands 2*, and *Borderlands 3* have shifted toward "mixed" and "mostly negative," largely attributed to these updates. According to Reddit user Noob4Head, the controversy surfaced on May 18 when players noticed modifications to the EULA. While Take-Two Interactive hasn’t publicly addressed these concerns, the updated terms reportedly grant root-level access under the guise of anti-cheat software. Critics speculate this could allow the collection of sensitive data such as passwords and contacts, though these remain unverified claims.

The introduction of anti-cheat measures has raised eyebrows within the Borderlands community, given the franchise’s strong ties to modding culture. Targeting third-party applications could inadvertently harm this vital aspect of the game, prompting concerns about potential privacy violations or gameplay limitations. The necessity of these changes ahead of the upcoming release of *Borderlands 4* remains unclear.

Not everyone agrees with the backlash. Some argue that the new EULA isn’t significantly different from earlier versions, pointing out that companies often reserve rights to manage their products. As Reddit user Librask noted, "The EULA isn’t much different than it was back in 2018." They also highlight that competitive games like *League of Legends* and *Valorant* have implemented similar measures without major issues. However, since Borderlands lacks a robust PvP competitive scene, the decision to include such software has puzzled many fans.

Despite the current storm surrounding the series, Take-Two has not yet responded directly to these criticisms. The future of these changes—and whether they will be revised—remains uncertain. Meanwhile, anticipation for *Borderlands 4* continues to build, with the game slated for release on September 12, 2025, across platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
