Capcom has announced a strategic focus on reviving its classic IPs, with the Okami and Onimusha series leading the charge. Dive into the details of their ambitious plans and discover which beloved series might soon see the light of day again.
Capcom Will Continue Reviving Classic IPs
Starting with Okami and Onimusha
In a press release dated December 13, Capcom unveiled their commitment to breathing new life into their storied IPs, beginning with the announcement of new titles in the Onimusha and Okami series. The company aims to deliver high-quality content that resonates with both new and returning players.
The upcoming Onimusha game, set to launch in 2026, will transport players to the Edo period in Kyoto, promising a rich narrative and immersive gameplay. Meanwhile, a sequel to Okami is in the works, with the original game's directors and development team at the helm. Although the release date for Okami's sequel remains undisclosed, fans can look forward to a faithful continuation of the beloved series.
“Capcom is dedicated to revitalizing our dormant IPs that have not seen new releases in recent years,” the company stated. “By tapping into our extensive library of content, we aim to enhance our corporate value through the revival of past IPs, such as the two titles announced, to consistently deliver high-quality, efficient titles.”
In addition to these revivals, Capcom is actively developing Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both scheduled for release in 2025. Despite their focus on classic IPs, Capcom continues to innovate with new titles like Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal, ensuring a diverse gaming portfolio.
Capcom’s Super Elections Might Reveal Future Titles
In February 2024, Capcom conducted a “Super Election,” allowing fans to vote on their favorite characters and desired sequels. The results highlighted a strong demand for new entries in series such as Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire.
Dino Crisis and Darkstalkers have been largely neglected since their last releases in 1997 and 2003, respectively. Breath of Fire 6, an online RPG, launched in July 2016 but was discontinued in September 2017, leaving fans eager for more. These long-dormant franchises are prime candidates for remasters or sequels.
While Capcom has not yet confirmed which series will be next in line for revival, the outcomes of the “Super Elections” provide valuable insights into fan preferences. The inclusion of Onimusha and Okami in the voting suggests that Capcom is closely aligned with its community's desires, potentially guiding future development decisions.
