The creative director at Firaxis Games, Ed Beach, has shared some vital tips for players embarking on their first journey through Civilization 7. In a detailed post on Steam, Beach emphasized the importance of using the tutorial for a successful introduction to the game, regardless of your experience level with the series.
"Civilization 7 introduces numerous new systems and mechanics, setting it apart from its predecessors," Beach noted. "Given its complexity, we've designed the tutorial to help players navigate these changes effectively."
One significant change is the introduction of the Ages system, which fundamentally alters the gameplay experience. A full campaign in Civilization 7 spans three distinct Ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Each transition between Ages requires players to select a new civilization, choose which Legacies to carry forward, and adapt to an evolving game world—a feature unique to this installment of the series.
Beach also explained the reasoning behind setting Small as the default map size. "While many veteran players prefer larger maps, we chose Small to provide a more focused and manageable learning environment," he said. "With a few empires on your continent and others to discover later, it's an ideal setting for mastering the new Diplomacy system and exploring the intricacies of ocean exploration during the Exploration Age."
He further recommended sticking with the Continents Plus map type to ease into the game's ocean exploration mechanics, a crucial aspect of the Exploration Age.
For new and returning players alike, Beach strongly advised keeping the tutorial active for the first full campaign. "The tutorial is tailored to introduce new features as you encounter them," he stated. "Even seasoned players will benefit from these insights due to the extensive updates across our game systems."
To manage the learning curve, Beach suggested focusing on one Advisor at a time. "Civilization 7 comes with four Advisors, each guiding you through different aspects of the game. Taking them on one by one can make the learning process less overwhelming," he added.
Once players feel comfortable with the basics, Beach recommended switching to the 'Only Warnings' setting. "This allows the Advisors to alert you to potential setbacks, a feature even our experienced team at Firaxis uses," he shared.
In addition to these insights, Firaxis recently revealed the post-launch roadmap for Civilization 7 during a special livestream event. The game will be available on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S starting February 11, with the Deluxe Edition offering early access from February 6.
