PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse control, particularly for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games that benefit from the precision these peripherals offer. Console ports of these genres, while increasingly common, often perform best on PC.
However, some PC games are surprisingly better with controllers. Games emphasizing reflex-based movement or fast-paced melee combat are often well-suited to gamepad controls. This is especially true for franchises originating on consoles before transitioning to PC.
This list has been updated (January 7, 2025) to reflect recent releases. While many 2024 titles, such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force, are arguably better with keyboard and mouse, some exceptions exist. Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered, for example, offers a slightly enhanced experience with a gamepad, though the difference isn't substantial.
Several upcoming PC game releases show promise for superior controller support:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita port echoing the Monster Hunter formula, suggesting natural controller compatibility.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently plays better with gamepads, and this remaster is expected to follow suit.
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Given the controller-centric design of its predecessor, a similar experience is anticipated.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: A typical PS5-to-PC port, likely prioritizing controller input, although keyboard and mouse may also prove adequate.
