Today's Mario Kart World Direct provided an in-depth look at the game's exciting new Free Roam mode, shedding light on its multiplayer aspects and the various activities players can engage in while exploring the expansive world of Mario Kart.
Although we had the opportunity to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it was only during today's Direct that we got a comprehensive understanding of Free Roam mode. This innovative feature allows players to freely navigate the game's vast, open-world map, reminiscent of Forza Horizon. Unlike previous Mario Kart titles where race tracks were isolated and accessible only during races, Mario Kart World integrates these tracks into a seamless open world, enabling players to travel between them in certain game modes and explore the areas in between. In Free Roam mode, when not engaged in races, players can embark on mini-adventures. The world is filled with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though the specific benefits of collecting these items remain undisclosed. Additionally, P-Switches are scattered throughout the map, which, when activated, trigger small challenges like collecting blue coins.
Moreover, Free Roam mode introduces a Photo Mode, allowing players to capture images of their racers in various poses and from different angles at any time. This mode isn't limited to solo play; it supports multiplayer as well. Players can explore the world together, take photos, tackle challenges, or simply hang out. Free Roam accommodates up to four players on the same system through split-screen play, or up to eight players via local wireless play, with two players per system.
The Mario Kart World Direct also showcased other new additions to the game, including fresh characters, courses, and modes. For a complete rundown of all the announcements, you can check them out here.
