FF7 Remake Trilogy's Future: PlayStation and Beyond
PS5 Launch Confirmed for FF7 Remake Part 3
PlayStation fans can breathe easy! Producers Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed during a January 23, 2025, interview with 4Gamer that FF7 Remake Part 3 will launch on the PS5. Addressing concerns stemming from the release history of previous installments, Kitase reassured fans, stating definitively, "No, you can rest assured about the next one (FF7 Remake Part 3)."
While the PS5 is mid-lifecycle, the eventual arrival of the complete FF7 Remake trilogy on a potential PS6 remains uncertain.
FF7 Remake Part 3 Release Date: Still Under Wraps
Square Enix remains tight-lipped about the release date. Development on Part 3 reportedly began alongside Part 2, with full production accelerating post-Part 2's February 2024 release. Leveraging reusable assets and a completed story draft suggests a potentially sooner-than-expected release.
Hamaguchi offered a positive update during a January 23, 2025, Famitsu interview: "It’s going very well…We are progressing without any delay from the schedule we planned when we launched the remake project, so we hope you will look forward to it."
Kitase expressed satisfaction with the completed story, stating, "At least I'm very satisfied with it, so I'm sure it will be a conclusion that will satisfy the fans as well."
Timed Exclusivity Expected for FF7 Remake Part 3
A March 6, 2024, Washington Post report indicated PlayStation secured timed exclusivity for the entire FF7 Remake trilogy. Following the pattern of previous releases (FF7 Remake: one year PS4 exclusivity; FF7 Remake Intergrade: six months PS5 exclusivity; FF7 Rebirth: timed PS5 exclusivity before a January 23, 2025 PC release), Part 3 is likely to follow suit.
Square Enix's Multi-Platform Strategy in Response to Declining Sales
Despite the FF7 Remake series' popularity, Square Enix's March 31, 2024, financial report revealed declining HD title sales. The company cited increased development costs and advertising expenses as contributing factors. In response, Square Enix plans an "aggressive multiplatform strategy," potentially expanding to Nintendo, Xbox, and other platforms beyond PlayStation, to boost sales. This shift could lead to future Square Enix titles reaching a wider audience.
