The free-to-play 3v3 shooter, Spectre Divide, is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 launch, and weeks after its arrival on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Sadly, its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.
Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the news in a social media statement. He explained that the Season 1 launch didn't achieve the necessary success to sustain the game and the studio. While initially optimistic, with around 400,000 players and a peak concurrent count of approximately 10,000 across platforms in the first week, the game ultimately lacked the sustained player base and revenue to cover ongoing costs. Despite exploring options like finding a publisher, additional investment, or acquisition, Mountaintop was unable to secure the funding needed to keep Spectre Divide running. Mitchell acknowledged the challenging current state of the gaming industry.
Spectre Divide Combat
Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days. Players will receive refunds for any money spent since the Season 1 launch. This news contradicts October 2024 reports stating the game was secure and would continue to receive updates.
IGN's August 2024 preview praised Spectre Divide's tactical gameplay and unique Duality system. However, its swift closure follows the recent failures of other live-service titles, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Concord.
