The highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a significant creative restructuring. Several key production figures have departed, leading to a complete reboot of the project. Read on for details on the departures and future plans.
God of War TV Series: A Creative Reset
The Show is NOT Cancelled
Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have left the God of War adaptation. Despite having completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.
Key figures remaining on board include executive producers Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio Creative Director), Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio). Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to revitalize the series' direction. Cancellation is not on the table.
The Road Ahead: Delays, But Not Defeat
Initially announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, the Amazon and Sony collaboration for the God of War TV series followed the immense success of the 2018 game reboot. This project reflects Sony's broader strategy of adapting its popular video game franchises into film and television, a strategy that began with the formation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. This initiative also includes a Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn.
Other successful adaptations already released include Uncharted (2022), the critically acclaimed The Last of Us (2023, with season two slated for 2025), Gran Turismo (2023), and Twisted Metal (2024). Further projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film (set for release on April 25, 2025).
