NPIXEL has officially announced the closure of Gran Saga, marking the end of its brief international journey. The game's services will cease on April 30th, 2025, and in-app purchases (IAPs) and new downloads have already been disabled. Gran Saga, which enjoyed a successful launch in Japan back in 2021, only made its global debut in November 2024, but struggled to maintain momentum, lasting just six months before the decision to shut down was made.
The primary reason for the closure appears to be financial instability and the inability to sustain the service in a highly competitive global market. Despite a promising start, Gran Saga found it challenging to carve out a niche among well-established games with loyal player bases. The gacha RPG genre is saturated, and without a truly innovative approach, new games like Gran Saga find it tough to thrive internationally.
This closure adds to the growing list of gacha RPGs that have recently shut down. For instance, last month saw the end of My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero, among others, highlighting the difficulties new or niche games face in an oversaturated market where players tend to stick with familiar titles.
For players who have made recent purchases and are seeking refunds, you have until May 30th to submit an inquiry. However, refunds may not be possible if the items have already been used or due to other store policies.
