Grounded fans received exciting news during the Xbox Games Showcase when Obsidian unexpectedly revealed Grounded 2. The sequel will follow its predecessor's approach by launching in early access next month, evolving through community feedback.
First Impressions: Bigger, But Familiar
Having played a demo at the showcase, my immediate reaction was how comfortably familiar Grounded 2 feels while expanding its world. Choosing to refresh my skills via the tutorial, I encountered the same group of kids - now two years older - once again shrunk by shady corporation Ominent.
The core survival mechanics remain intact: analyzing objects for crafting recipes, scavenging for resources like mushrooms and dewdrops, and battling backyard creatures with makeshift weapons. It's everything fans loved about the original, polished and ready for new adventures.
Quality-of-Life Improvements
The demo revealed thoughtful upgrades including:
- An Omni-tool combining all utilities into one inventory-free device
- New dodge mechanics in combat (surprisingly absent from the original)
The Big Addition: Buggy Mounts
The most substantial new feature previewed was the Buggy mount system. Riding an armored ant proved surprisingly exhilarating, offering:
- Enhanced mobility through a much-expanded world
- Resource collection while moving
- Combat assistance against hostile creatures
A Vast New Playground
Grounded 2's setting shifts from a backyard to Brookhollow Park, offering approximately triple the explorable area. Though my demo only showcased the starting zone, the potential for grander adventures is clear. The expanded space accommodates not just mounts, but presumably larger mysteries to uncover.
While questions remain about other significant additions, the combination of improved mechanics, engaging mounts, and fresh narrative opportunities makes Grounded 2 an exciting prospect for fans. Early access begins next month via PC and Xbox platforms.
