Rockstar Games has postponed the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 to May 26, 2026, moving it from its original fall 2025 window.
In a statement, the studio expressed regret for the major delay affecting what is anticipated to become the most significant entertainment release ever.
"We sincerely apologize for this timeline adjustment," Rockstar stated. "The overwhelming enthusiasm and buzz surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto installment has been incredibly motivating for our development team. We're grateful for your ongoing patience and encouragement as we finalize the project.
"Our mission with every title we release is to surpass what our audience anticipates—Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We hope our community recognizes that this extended development period is essential to meet the high standards of excellence you deserve.
"We're excited to bring you more updates in the near future."
Rockstar's announcement, while confirming the revised GTA 6 launch date, came without any new gameplay or trailers—meaning fans will need to wait longer for the second official trailer. The statement also omitted specific platform details, fueling speculation that the May 2026 launch could include a PC version alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
When IGN previously questioned Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar's parent company Take-Two, about whether the fall 2025 target was achievable, he responded, "There's always a degree of uncertainty in game development, and being overconfident can sometimes tempt fate. Still, we were feeling quite positive about it." This exchange occurred last February.
In a new investor communication issued today, May 2, Zelnick endorsed the decision to move GTA 6 into Take-Two’s 2027 fiscal year.
"We fully support Rockstar’s choice to allocate more time to perfect their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI. The game is poised to redefine entertainment standards and deliver an unforgettable blockbuster experience.
“Although we recognize the global excitement surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI and take release timelines seriously, our priority is unwavering quality. As we advance our impressive lineup of upcoming titles, we anticipate sustained growth and increased value for shareholders over multiple years.”
With GTA 6 pushed back, the second half of 2025 gives other major titles more space to capture audience attention. Upcoming releases such as Gearbox's Borderlands 4, EA's Battlefield, Bungie's Marathon, and Sony's Ghost of Yotei can now launch in a less crowded market. Nintendo, which is gearing up for the Switch 2 debut, will also gain from the adjusted schedule.
Conversely, studios that accelerated production to launch before GTA 6’s initial 2025 slot may face challenges. And any developer targeting a May 2026 release will likely need to reconsider their launch strategy.
