Legendary Entertainment has chosen Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind The Eric Andre Show, to direct their upcoming Street Fighter film adaptation. This news comes via The Hollywood Reporter, which also notes Capcom's significant involvement in the project. The film is slated for release on March 20, 2026.
This marks another attempt to bring the iconic fighting game franchise to the silver screen, following the 1994 adaptation starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and the late Raul Julia. While initially panned by critics, that film has since gained a cult following.
Casting details remain under wraps, but fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters grace the big screen. The project initially had Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) attached, but they left last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist, comedic tone, a direction that aligns well with the game's often over-the-top style.
In the meantime, fans can immerse themselves in the latest installment of the franchise, Street Fighter 6, recently updated with the addition of Mai Shiranui. Read our full Street Fighter 6 review [ttpp] for a comprehensive look at the game.
