In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, the beasts you encounter are not only ferocious but also unforgettable, each with its own unique characteristics. Among them, Rompopolo stands out as one of the most distinctive Brute Wyverns. If you're looking to conquer this beast, here's a comprehensive guide on how to unlock, defeat, and capture it.
How to Unlock Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds
Your first encounter with Rompopolo, a Brute Wyvern-type monster, occurs in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. As you journey through the Oilwell Basin region on your way to Azuz City, Rompopolo will make its appearance, and you'll need to defeat it to progress. Once you've triumphed over Rompopolo at least once, it will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can engage it repeatedly by exploring the Oilwell Basin or by starting the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.
How to Beat and Capture Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds
To prepare effectively for this battle, arm yourself with water-element weapons, which you can obtain from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest up to this point in the story. Additionally, equip gear with fire resistance, which you can farm from Uth Duna (starting with the belt and greaves) or from Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I, or a general defense charm like Defense Charm I. Before the fight, don't forget to boost your health and stamina by grilling a meal.
Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses
Rompopolo is a unique wyvern with a bipedal body and saggy skin that it inflates with gas, utilizing this gas for various explosive attacks. Be prepared for potential poison status ailments, and carry Antidotes. Your Palico can help cleanse these ailments as well. Key attacks to be wary of include:
- Arm Swipe – Rompopolo performs two forward swipes with its clawed arms, easily dodged due to its limited range.
- Lunge With Arm Swipe – It charges forward and executes an arcing swipe with both arms.
- Tail Swing – Rompopolo swings its tail at its target, a physical attack to watch out for.
- Poison Stream or Swipe – It may spray a stream of poison gas or charge while swinging its head and spraying poison.
- Oil Explosion – From a distance, it injects gas into oil pools to cause explosions beneath you; dodge these carefully.
- Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, Rompopolo pumps more gas into the oil for a larger explosion, which you must dodge to avoid significant damage.
Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?
As with previous *Monster Hunter* games, you have the option to either capture or kill Rompopolo near the end of the battle. To capture, you must weaken it until your Palico notes it looks "tired," then use a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap to ensnare it. Follow this with at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out and complete the capture.
Both capturing and killing Rompopolo are viable strategies, with the primary difference being the item rewards you can obtain. Although the exact differences in drops are still to be confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank drops from Rompopolo:
