Minecraft celebrated its 15th anniversary last year, and while it may now be entering what some might call its teenage years, Mojang has made it clear: there are no plans for a sequel.
During a recent visit to Mojang’s Stockholm studio, IGN asked whether the best-selling game of all time would ever get a follow-up. Ingela Garneij, executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, responded with both humor and clarity: “Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2.”
While a so-called Minecraft 2.0 isn’t in development, that doesn’t mean the game will remain stagnant. In fact, Mojang has ambitious plans stretching far into the future—with a goal to at least double the game’s current lifespan.
“We've existed for 15 years,” Garneij explained. “We want to exist at least 15 years more. So actually, Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I work as a team. We set the vision and strategy for our game—what we can do beyond that.”
This long-term vision is driven by Mojang’s commitment to innovation, building fresh ideas upon the game’s well-established foundation. However, Garneij acknowledged that the game’s age does present challenges.
“I think the age of the game is a challenge. It's a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. So other new games have new engines, and they can run really fast. So I would say the technology and our age [are our biggest challenges].”
Despite these technical limitations, Minecraft remains one of the most popular games in the world—and shows no signs of fading from the spotlight. Additionally, Mojang has no current plans to shift the game to a free-to-play model or incorporate generative AI features.
So while fans won’t be diving into Minecraft 2 anytime soon—or perhaps ever—it’s reassuring to know that Mojang remains fully committed to supporting and expanding the beloved sandbox experience we all know and love.
