Nintendo Switch 2 Adds Second USB-C Port for Enhanced User Experience

by Zachary May 13,2025

The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially unveiled, bringing with it exciting new features and a fresh look at the system. One of the standout additions to the new console is the innovative Joy-Cons, which now feature optical sensors, allowing them to function as a mouse. This is just one of the quality-of-life enhancements that the Nintendo Switch 2 introduces, and there's another feature you might have overlooked in the initial reveal trailer.

The original Nintendo Switch came equipped with a single USB-C port located on the underside of the tablet. However, the Nintendo Switch 2 significantly improves upon this by doubling the number of Type-C ports to two. This change is more impactful than it may seem at first glance. On the original Switch, using multiple accessories simultaneously often required purchasing additional (and sometimes unreliable) adapters, which occasionally posed the risk of damaging your console.

The first Nintendo Switch claimed compliance with USB-C standards, but in reality, it utilized a unique and complex specification. This custom spec needed to be reverse-engineered by third-party manufacturers to ensure their docks and accessories worked correctly without damaging the console's internals. With the addition of a second USB-C port on the Switch 2, there is a strong indication that the console will adhere to standard USB-C protocols, enhancing compatibility with accessories right out of the box.

The USB-C standard has matured significantly since 2017, now supporting high-speed data transfers and 4K display outputs. It can even facilitate the connection of an external GPU to a small PC or laptop via the Thunderbolt standard. Nintendo's decision to include a secondary USB-C port suggests a commitment to supporting these advanced standards, which can handle various connections, including external displays, networking, data transfer, and high-wattage power.

It is likely that the bottom port of the Switch 2 will be more sophisticated, as it would connect to Nintendo's official dock, where most accessories are plugged in. Ideally, the top port would also support fast charging, display outputs, and other accessories, enabling the use of external power banks alongside other devices. This represents a substantial quality-of-life upgrade over the original console.

While the additional features like the mysterious C button on the Switch 2 are intriguing, we'll need to wait until April 2, 2025, for Nintendo's Switch 2 Direct presentation to get all the specifics.
