Excitement is brewing among fans of the iconic fighting game series, Super Smash Bros., as its creator, Masahiro Sakurai, has reignited speculation about a new installment. Sakurai recently re-posted the announcement for the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, set for April 2, with a simple yet electrifying "Ooh!" This brief expression of excitement has sent ripples of anticipation through the community, with many interpreting it as a subtle hint toward a new Super Smash Bros. game for the upcoming console.
While Sakurai's post alone might not seem like much, it's part of a larger pattern of teasers that suggest he may be gearing up for a big reveal. In 2022, Sakurai launched his YouTube channel, which he later wound down after hinting that he was not finished creating games. His final video on the channel intriguingly mentioned a new project that could be unveiled "sooner or later."
Despite these hints, no official announcements have been made regarding a new Super Smash Bros. game. Sakurai has previously expressed uncertainty about how the series could surpass the monumental Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch, which boasts an expansive roster including characters from beyond Nintendo's universe, such as Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Joker from Persona 5, and Steve and Alex from Minecraft.
However, the likelihood of a new Super Smash Bros. game for the Nintendo Switch 2 seems high, especially considering the commercial success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which has sold over 35.88 million copies. It's also worth noting that Nintendo has consistently released a new Super Smash Bros. game with each of its consoles since the original debuted on the N64 in 1999.
