"Nintendo Switch 2 Filings Hint at NFC and Amiibo Compatibility"

by Sebastian May 14,2025

Recent filings for the Nintendo Switch 2 have confirmed the inclusion of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, indicating that the next-generation console will likely support Amiibo figures. As reported by The Verge, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) documents reveal that the RFID feature is integrated into the right Joy-Con, similar to the original Nintendo Switch. This raises the question of whether the Switch 2 will be compatible with existing Amiibo figures that unlock in-game content.

The FCC filings also shed light on the charging capabilities of the Switch 2, which can be powered through either its bottom USB-C port or a new top port, a feature anticipated by fans following the console's official reveal. Additionally, the Switch 2 will support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks with up to 80MHz of bandwidth, an upgrade from the Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) supported by the original Switch. However, there's no mention of Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E in the filings, as noted by The Verge.

Regarding power specifications, the Switch 2 remains rated for a maximum of 15V, but the filings reference an AC adapter that can go up to 20V, leaving the actual charging speed uncertain.

Last month, a Nintendo patent hinted at a novel feature for the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers, suggesting they could be attached upside down. This is facilitated by magnets, a departure from the rail system used in the original Switch. This change not only allows for greater flexibility in controller placement but also opens up possibilities for new gameplay mechanics. While the impact on hardware might be minimal, it could significantly enhance player customization and interaction with the console.

If the Nintendo Switch 2 implements the features suggested by the patent, Nintendo is expected to provide a comprehensive overview during the special Nintendo Direct event scheduled for 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time on April 2.

While Nintendo has not yet announced a specific release window for the Switch 2, speculation points to a launch between June and September. This speculation is fueled by hands-on events scheduled up until June and a statement from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon, suggesting the console will be available before September.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility features and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, many details, including information about other games and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed. Notably, the Joy-Con mouse theory has gained some traction among fans and analysts.
